War on Drugs

Does anyone remember the commercial from the 80’s about the War on Drugs??

Okay, maybe I’m the only one…

In 1987, Partnership for a Drug Free America launched a commercial campaign which imbedded into our brains a very powerful image. This commercial has actually been named the 8th best commercial of all time!

In all seriousness, one cannot escape the current media onslaught of information concerning opioid addictions and death statistics. The news is grave and it doesn’t look like its going to improve anytime soon. Our eyes need to be wide open and we should be asking ourselves how we can help in this crisis. Here are some startling facts:

  • One of the fastest growing groups affected by opioid addiction and overdose is the 12-15-year-old age group.
  • The number #1 cause of death following low back surgery is opioid overdose.
  • 91 people die every day in the U.S. from opioid overdose.

These statistics are mind-blowing. What’s going on here? How did this happen?

Unfortunately, pain is part of life and all of us will encounter pain at many times in our lives. Pain though, is not the problem, but an indicator of a problem. Think about this: say you walk in the door after work and your fire alarm is going off. Come to find out, you house is on fire! You call 911 and the fire chief runs in and goes straight to the fire alarm to treat it. Wouldn’t that be crazy? It absolutely would be crazy! Opioids treat fire alarms, not fires.

The fire alarm is not the problem. The FIRE is the problem.

“How did this happen?”, you may ask.

Good question. Doctors try and help patients handle their pain, which is kind and noble, but prescription pain meds are addictive and end up causing harm in many ways. These addictive drugs “treat” the indicator (the fire alarm), not the cause (the fire). Your house may burn down because you did not hear the fire alarm.
