TMJD or TMD

Do you wear a mouth guard? Have you been told you have TMJ? Are you trying to avoid jaw surgery? Do you seem to be getting more symptoms and not getting the relief you need?

Suffering from migraine or tension headaches, neck pain, dizziness, nausea, shoulder pain, radiating arm or face pain, numbness in the arms or hands, mental fog, severe mood swings, blurred vision, balance issues or even depression? It could be your jaw! I know it sounds crazy but people are having all these issues and more while science is pointing to the culprit…TMJ Disorder (TMJD). They are desperate for help and spend over $4 billion dollars per year with no real help! As a matter of scientific fact these poor patients end up with screws and wires put into their jaws, get fitted for mouth guards and other expensive appliances only to experience more symptoms while emptying their bank accounts. Now that is depressing.

Let’s step back a minute and see what is really going on here. First of all the Dentists that I speak with would like to set the record straight. When people come to them and say, “Doc, I think I have TMJ,” they cringe because TMJ says absolutely nothing. It would be like one of my patients coming to me and saying they have a nose or, “Doc, I am suffering from elbow.” TMJ is a joint and you actually have 2 of them. One on the right and one on the left. Everyone has TMJ or 2 TMJs. What patients mean to say is they are suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJD. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get down to business.

One of the biggest culprits in messing up the TMJ and causing TMJD is poor neck posture. Can you say texting, staring at computer screens, back packs, stress, car accidents, sports injuries, weird sleeping positions, and generally bad posture? Changes in neck posture WILL change the way the TMJ works. Try this exercise if you don’t believe me. Look straight ahead and open and close your mouth about 5 times and see how that feels. Now put your head back and look at the ceiling while opening and closing your mouth 5 times. Notice how your jaw shifted? Do it with putting your chin down and feel it shift even more! See!

Changing neck position changes the way the jaw moves and this is where the entire pain cycle begins. If you only treat the jaw, you will not be happy. You MUST evaluate the jaw and neck and treat both! If not, you will be miserable. Those are not empty words. I see it happen every day.
